Once Upon a Picnic: Celebrating Becky’s Birthday
Share
If you got to know either of our families growing up, you would quickly find out we were “bookish.” You could pop by at any time of day and were destined to notice piles of books all about the house. There were shelves of books, too many to count, books in baskets, books at bedsides, books at the table, and books in the hammock outside.
Becky’s Birthday by Tasha Tudor was one of those books and has been a story from our childhood that stayed with us long after we outgrew picture books. It is a cherished tale filled with pastoral beauty, whimsical traditions, and the magic of simple celebrations.
With its delicate illustrations and timeless charm, the story has inspired each of us in different ways. And last spring, along the banks of a quiet Alabama creek, we brought it to life in a way we will never forget.

A Beloved Artist and a Lasting Influence
Tasha Tudor has long been one of our family’s favorite illustrators. Growing up, Brigette spent countless hours copying scenes from Tudor’s books, studying her techniques more intently than those of any other artist. Her work shaped not only artistic inspiration but also an appreciation for beauty, tradition, and simple rhythms.
One year, Brigette’s father planned a birthday gift she would never forget - a trip to New England to visit Tasha Tudor’s home in Vermont, but history intervened. The date was September 11, 2001, and the trip was canceled as the world paused in grief and uncertainty. Though they were never able to take the trip, the inspiration remained.
Today, while Tasha Tudor has passed on, her legacy lives through her beloved stories and paintings. Among them, Becky’s Birthday, now out of print, holds a particularly special place in our hearts.

The Story That Captured Our Imaginations
Becky’s Birthday tells the story of a young girl celebrating her special day on her family’s farm. The beauty of the tale lies in its simplicity: a lovingly prepared picnic, loved ones gathered around, and the enchantment of the natural world.
Growing up, some of us would play “Becky’s Birthday,” recreating scenes from the book with eager imagination. For years, it was Brigette’s mom’s dream to host a real Becky’s Birthday picnic. Last Mother’s Day, that dream became a reality.

Bringing Becky’s Birthday to Life
Gathering our moms, sisters, and daughters together, we met at a beautiful creek on an Alabama Land Trust property. Surrounded by sunshine, wild greenery, and the gentle sound of flowing water, we reenacted elements of Becky’s story.
In the book, a lazy cow makes an unexpected appearance. While we didn’t have such a guest, several of our boys eagerly volunteered to dress the part. We loved the proof that imagination is alive and well in the next generation.
For the most charming scene of the book, when Becky’s family floats her birthday cake down the creek on a wooden board, MaryClaire baked a delicious tea-infused cake. In true Tasha Tudor storybook fashion, we floated the cake down the creek - just as in the book - before retrieving it and promptly enjoying every bite.
Watching the book come to life was truly a childhood dream come true. Alongside the celebration, we captured the memories with a photo shoot to preserve the magic of the day.
