Westward Ho! Hello, South Dakota! (Day 37)

Westward Ho! Hello, South Dakota! (Day 37)

We spent the morning dodging rainstorms across the rest of Montana, a long drive through grayness at the edge of the storms. But then, the afternoon brought a new state, blue skies, and a whole new landscape to explore!

Our reward for all those miles? Our first glimpse of Mount Rushmore as we drove through Keystone! It was so exciting to see those famous faces carved into the mountains. We drove past, getting different views, on our way to our beautiful campsite at Horse Thief Lake State Park.
The lake is the perfect size for kayaking, and our site is right near the water. But the kids are most excited about all the amazing rock formations surrounding us—they are already planning their rock-climbing adventures! It feels like we’ve started a whole new chapter of our trip. So ready to explore the Black Hills!
