Westward Ho! Lakeside Fun & A Moving Mount Rushmore Experience! (Day 38)

Westward Ho! Lakeside Fun & A Moving Mount Rushmore Experience! (Day 38)

We started our day at what has become one of our favorite campgrounds of the whole trip! Horse Thief Lake is so beautiful, and we loved being able to just carry our kayaks to the water whenever we wanted. The best part? The water was WARM! After so many icy polar plunges, everyone loved swimming and splashing without freezing for a change!

Later, we headed to the main event: Mount Rushmore. We had heard mixed reviews, but our family thought it was incredible! One of our daughters even declared it the "best part of the trip" after watching the fascinating video about its creation.

We stayed for the lighting ceremony at dusk, and we are so glad we did. It was a wonderful presentation on the history of our nation. The most powerful moment was when they invited all active duty and retired military members to come forward. Seeing 50-70 people honored for their service was incredibly moving and a beautiful tribute. What a special end to the day.
